Egg-citing adventures: planning an unforgettable Easter egg hunt

Setting yourself up for egg-cellent success this Easter!

With the shelves already stocked to the rafters with Easter eggs, we feel we can get away with looking ahead to the Easter break and all the fun that comes with it.

With that in mind, we’re going to be looking at fun and innovative ways to breathe new life into the traditional Easter egg hunt!

Chocolate cravings

We all know that finding chocolate eggs is a highlight for kids, and who are we to disappoint. But don’t feel obligated to hide a ton of large eggs or you’ll likely have to deal with the sugar madness later. Small, foil wrapped eggs are available in most grocery stores in multi-buy packs, and because they are so small…you can get craft with the hiding places and make the hunt last longer. Even better, because they are so small, they are easy to hide in both the house and the garden!

Plastic fantastic

Head to your local craft store and you will no doubt find multi-packs of plastic easter eggs. Ideally, you want to find the ones that can open so you can hide a little message inside. All that’s left to do is pick your theme for the messages. You could write little messages of encouragement, love, happiness. You could write mini tasks, or even mini physical activities. The opportunities are endless.

Activity ideas:
  • Hop like a chick
  • Plank like a chocolate bar
  • Bunny jumps
Message ideas:
  • You’re amazing!
  • You’re egg-cellent
  • I love your smile
  • Save some chocolate for later!
  • The Easter Bunny says hi!
  • Don’t worry, be hoppy!

Glow get ’em

Take your plastic easter egg hunt into the night by putting some glow sticks inside (you might need larger plastic eggs for this one).

Hand-painted happiness

Let’s face it, the Easter holidays are long! Work smarter, not harder, but spreading the Easter Egg Hunt preparations over a few days (you can thank us later). Hard boil some fresh eggs, or find some paintable craft eggs at your local craft store. Equip the kids with pens, paints or crayons (whatever is best suited to their age) and let them get creative. Once the eggs are decorated and allowed to dry, you can let each child hide them for their friends or family to find. They make a nice little Easter keepsake too!

Clue-tastic

If you’re intending on giving your child/ren one of the big easter eggs (you know the ones!!), why not make your mini-me’s work for it! Using plastic eggs again for this one, write clues for the children to follow which will, one by one, lead to the next egg and the next clue, until they reach the end and discover the main event!

Get crafty

Again, if you have a few days of the holidays to fill with activities, roll the joy of the easter egg hunt into another day of crafting. Using plastic eggs, hide craft supplies within each, that when all found, will enable the child/ren to make something during the holidays. Easy to make ideas such as friendship bracelets, diy tissue paper stained-glass windows, diy Easter card supplies, or even some coloured chalk so they can enjoy some outside art on a beautiful spring day!

Scavenger hunt

Using the trusty plastic eggs again (well, we like to think you’ll get your monies worth!), hide messages of items that need finding after the initial easter egg hunt is over. You could also hide a mini chocolate egg inside along with the message so the kids get their chocolate fix!

Eggs-cellent extras

Get dressed up for the occasion by making your own Easter bunny ear headband, instructions for which can be found in our Easter Activity Book!
