World Book Day is the perfect opportunity for children to dress up as their favourite storybook character while celebrating their love for reading. But let’s be honest- every parent knows the sheer panic of hearing “It’s World Book Day tomorrow and I need a costume!” with approximately zero hours’ notice. Suddenly you’re making hats out of old cereal boxes and fashioning a wizard’s robe out of an old bedsheet. But, not to worry! Whether you’re short on time, working with a tight budget, or simply want to keep things simple, we’ve got you covered this year. We have put together five easy World Book Day costumes that you can put together last minute.
World Book Day is an annual event that is typically celebrated on the first Thursday of March. This year, World Book Day falls on the 6th of March, however, many schools and nurseries may choose to celebrate on Friday 8th of March instead. It encourages children to dress up as their favorite storybook characters and create fun costumes while taking part in a range of games and activities throughout the day. Some schools across the UK even give out book vouchers that can be exchanged for free books to encourage more reading for younger children.
While kids are having fun at school, for parents, World Book Day often involves putting together a costume that represents their child’s favourite character. Some ideas include Room on the Broom, Where’s Wally? and Winnie the Pooh. Gangster Granny and Harry Potter are also popular for World Book Day costumes.
Alice in Wonderland is a timeless classic and is extremely recognisable, making it a great costume choice for children who love adventure. This outfit choice is also simple to create and should be considered a no-fuss option for parents while still looking impressive.
You can create Alice’s pretty costume using items you may already have lying around at home. Firstly, start with plain blue dress. This could be an old school dress or a light blue summer dress that you already have. Next, layer a white apron over the dress to achieve Alice’s signature look, and complete the costume idea by adding a black or blue headband. For some extra drama and fun, you can even add a toy caterpillar or a rabbit as well as a little teacup as a reference to the Mad Hatter’s tea party.
Black shoes and white tights work well but aren’t essential, so don’t worry if you don’t have a pair of white tights lying around. A pair of white socks and dark shoes will work perfectly!
Peter Rabbit remains a favourite among children and parents and is perfect for younger children to dress up as this World Book Day. Peter Rabbit’s look is also incredibly easy to pull off with just a few wardrobe staples and extra bits and bobs you have lying around the house. A perfect last-minute idea for your kids!
Start with a base of brown or beige clothing—this could be leggings, joggers, or even a onesie—to represent his fur. You can create Peter’s signature blue coat by wearing a blue cardigan or jacket. If you already have a pair or rabbit ears from an old costume, these will work as the perfect finishing touch, but if not, a bit of DIY will do the trick. Cut two ears from a piece of cardboard and colour them with pens or paint and attach them to a spare headband.
To complete the transformation in the perfect Peter Rabbit for World Book Day, use face paint to add a little pink nose and some whiskers.
Another great idea for world book day costumes is Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This book is a classic bedtime read loved by children everywhere. Using bright colours and playful images, this is the perfect and imaginative outfit for World Book Day. The costume is also simple to put together while still looking fantastic.
To create the perfect caterpillar outfit, start with a plain green long-sleeve top and matching leggings or trousers. Once you have put your child into the perfect caterpillar base layer/ body, you can start to cut out large rings of felt or fabric in different shades of green and attach them to the top and trousers using safety pins or glue. This helps create the segmented look of the caterpillar’s body. However, we recommend keeping the safety pins and any hot glue guns away from little hands.
Next, it’s time for the best bit- the antennae! These can be easily made by attaching two pipe cleaners to a headband. All you need to do is twist them into shape. You could even get your kids to carry a small cardboard apple as a prop, to mimic the hungry caterpillar munching his way through the book.
This costume is a simple yet creative way to celebrate one of the most iconic children’s stories. Plus, it’s comfy enough for a full day at school—perfect for a hungry little bookworm! We would love to see your versions of this costume idea. Don’t forget to tag us in your social media posts on facebook or Instagram of your little hungry caterpillars.
What kid doesn’t love dressing up as a tiger? Inspired by Judith Kerr’s beloved classic, The Tiger Who Came to Tea, this is a fantastic costume idea for World Book Day, especially for children who love animals and dressing up.
The quickest way to create the look is with a tiger-print onesie, which instantly transforms your child into the friendly, tea-drinking tiger from the story. However, if you don’t have one, don’t worry! An orange top and trousers make a great alternative. To add the signature tiger stripes, use black fabric paint, a marker, or even strips of black fabric carefully stuck onto the clothing.
For the finishing touch, create some tiger ears using a simple headband. Cut out two ear shapes from cardboard or felt, colour them orange with black details, and attach them securely to the headband. Now for the fun part— it’s time for the face paint! Why not draw black whiskers, a nose, and some extra stripes on your child’s cheeks to complete the transformation.
To really bring the character to life, why not add a teacup or a toy teapot as a prop?
For children who prefer action-packed stories and comic book heroes, Spider-Man is a great costume idea for their school World Book Day. Although making a superhero costume sounds complex, the good thing is that most kids tend to have superhero costumes at home already, and if this is you, then you’re sorted!
However, if you don’t have a ready-made costume, there’s no need to worry—you can create a simple DIY version in no time. You can start with a red top and blue trousers or leggings as the base. Grab some black paint or a marker pen and carefully draw a web pattern to recreate Spider-Man’s signature look.
For the finishing touch, add a Spider-Man mask if you have one, or get creative with face paint (if you don’t mind waking up a little bit earlier). Paint a red base on your child with a black web design and white patches around the eyes. This costume will instantly transform your child into their favourite superhero.
Creating a fun and comfortable costume from scratch doesn’t have to be hard work. With a little creativity, you can put together a fab outfit using items you already have at home.
At Premier Education, we recommend that you start by checking your child’s wardrobe before buying anything new. We wouldn’t want you to waste your money! When putting together World Book Day costumes, safety should always come first. Children will be wearing their outfits for an entire school day, so it’s important to make sure they can move and run around comfortably without any restrictions. We would recommend avoiding long excess pieces of fabric that could easily cause tripping. We’d hate for your little ones to hurt themselves while they’re having so much fun.
If your child’s costume includes a mask or an additional headband, make sure that they can still see clearly so that it doesn’t effect their learning for the day. Also, if your child will be wearing face paint, make sure you do a patch test the night before World Book Day, to make sure that this doesn’t irritate them.
If your kids are wanting to take their costumes a step further by adding props and accessories, we would suggest using lightweight and child-safe materials. Make sure you avoid giving them anything sharp or heavy. Keep it simple with cardboard cutouts or just keep it simple and comfortable with a practical costume idea. Safety is key!
